The type of Flea Control treatment for fleas on your cat will depend on
several factors:
The severity of the Flea infestation, including carpets, bedding and furniture.
Whether you only have a cat or cats, or both cats and dogs.
Whether your cats and/or dogs spend all their time indoors or outdoors (or both).
Time of the year the Flea and Tick problem occurs
The area of exposure to fleas.
Determining whether or not your pet is allergic to fleas.
Flea Control Recommendations May Include:
Many products are available for Flea Control and treatment of flea
infestation. All products have advantages and disadvantages and may/
may not be safe to use with other Flea Control products.
Over the counter Flea Control products are available without a prescription,
such as flea powders, sprays and collars that contain pyrethrin,
which can be moderately effective. The more effective, flea control
products which can be purchased are: Program (lufenuron), Frontline (fipronil) and
Advantage (imidacloprid).
The more effective flea control products which are more potent include:
ProgramŽ (lufenuron), a product that can be administered orally
or by injection, and that inhibits the development of the flea
FrontlineŽ (fipronil) and AdvantageŽ (imidacloprid), topical
products placed directly on the skin that prevent and kill fleas
If your pet already has fleas, they must be killed first with Flea Control
products such as, FrontlineŽ (fipronil) or AdvantageŽ (imidacloprid).
Flea Control recommendations vary depending upon local and
regional variations in climate. New flea control products are
constantly being developed. Consult your veterinarian about the
newest and most effective product for your particular area and
circumstances.
