Fleas and Ticks - Symptoms to Watch For
Severe itching caused by Cat Flea or Dog flea
Your pet may chew and bite the tail, rump, back legs and occasionally front legs.
They may have Oozing lesions (lick granuloma) caused from chewing.
Your pet may have hot spots on the hips or face, which could be severe skin damage
caused by excessive scratching
Flea allergy dermatitis is a common cause of itchiness and scratching in cats,
although there are other medical problems which could lead to similar symptoms.
Other disorders that should be excluded are:
Mite infestation (Cheyletiellosis)
Food allergies
Traumasd or other causes of local skin irritations
Mange
Atopy
Ear infection (Otitis externa)
Primary keratinization defects
Some pets may have symptoms of more than one medical problem. For example, scratching
and/or biting due to flea irritation can cause hot spots (acute moist dermatitis) and secondary
bacterial skin infections (pyoderma).
Flea Control Treatment
Flea Control and treatment of flea allergy dermatitis involves the following:
Flea Control, prevention of flea bites. The most important part of Flea Control treatment
is to prevent the flea from biting with effective flea control on your cat or dog and in the
environment.
Flea Control treatment of secondary skin infections. Antibiotics and antifungal drugs may be
necessary to treat and control secondary skin infections which can be triggered by the flea allergy.
