PET OWNERS DEALING WITH YOUR PETS ILLNESS

When our beloved pet becomes old or sick, we as owners have to tackle a tough question. Has the time come to euthanize my pet? It's a time we all dread and many questions are often asked, am I making the right decision? How will I know when the time is right? The first question we should ask ourselves is: what is my pets quality of life?

Only you can answer this question and it does not have to be difficult. What does your pet like doing best? Running in the park, going for walks, eating, settling down on the couch? Does your pet still do any of these things? When you can answer this question then you can decide if your pets quality of life is changing. If you feel that they can still enjoy some of these things, then maybe the time has not come yet, maybe you should cherish some time with your pet, take time to say goodbye, spoil them for a while, then reassess the questions again.

If your pet has a chronic illness you may want to consider euthanisia sooner rather than later, especially if it can no longer do the things it used to like to and you know is in pain. It is not silly to cry, grief comes to most people more than once in their life and you should not feel silly crying over a pet. Non pet owners may not be able to understand this, but to the majority of us humans it's completely accepted to feel grief over the loss of a pet. Most pets over the years become very much part of the family unit, they go on vacations, sleep on our beds and therefore grief should be expected and will happen.

When we lose our pets to illness or old age, lots of pet owners toy with the idea of replacing them. You may not want to replace your pet straightaway, your pet may be irreplacable, there is not time limit on how long you should grieve. If and when you begin to want a new pet, then this is the time to go get one. Mark Woodcock
