ALLERGIES IN PUPPIES
If you puppy starts to scratch excessively which leads to coat loss and red skin, they may be
suffering from an allergy. Your veterinarian will be able to tell the difference between an
allergy and normal puppy behavior. If your puppy does have an allergy, you will need to identify
the allergen to be able to control it. Puppies can be allergic to many things, allergens are
probably the most common and fall into the following categories:
CONTACT ALLERGIES: This is when your puppies skin is sensitive to something, like fabric or
house plants.
FOOD ALLERGIES: Although not common in puppies, some puppies do react to the ingredients in
their food. It is important that you do not alter your puppies food until you have discussed
this problem with your veterinarian, so they can eliminate any other possibilities.
OTHER UNCOMMON ALLERGIES: Your puppy can become allergic to their own hormones, normally known
as hormonal hypersensitivity.
As with all allergies, you need to avoid the allergen and control the symptoms to make your
puppy more comfortable. Should the allergen by avoidable, medication or injections administered
by your veterinarian may be necessary.
