ABANDONED CATS AND DOGS

Dogs and cats are abandoned for all sorts of reasons. Amazingly some people buy puppies and kittens forgetting that they very quickly grow up. But there are many reasons why dogs and cats are abondoned. The most popular are as follows:

1 Moving house and the new house is not suitable or does not have a garden.

2 An un-neutered cat or dog has a litter and there is no room for the litter.

3 Divorce and no one wants the sole responsibity for the pet.

4 Cost of feeding and Veterinarian expenses,

5 The cat or dog has become agressive.

6 The cat or dog has developed a long term illness and the owner cannot either afford or look after a sick animal.

7 The owner has become allergic to cat or dog hair.

8 A new partner does not get along with the cat or dog.

9 A change of job means there is no time to look after a cat or dog.

10 A landlord does not allow pets and this was not originally known.

11 Neighbours complain about the cat or dog.

12 The dog or cat is not clean in the house.

The cats and dogs that are sent to shelters are often not very old, generally have not been neutered and very often never visited a Veterinarian and not bond has developed between the animal and its owner.

More has to be done to inform people on the care of animals and the responsibility they are taken on when they take a cat or dog into their home.

It is a very complex issue and one that must be looked at in more depth to fully understand why people who are willing to give a dog or cat a home find they cannot cope with that animal. Perhaps if more help or training was available then not so many animals would end up in shelters.
